THE CHURCHES OF ILOCOS SUR, Part 2

After spending the night at the Bishop’s residence as a guest of Bishop Daniel Presto in San Fernando de La Union, I embarked on a full day of travel through several towns in Ilocos Sur that I have not yet visited on the way to Vigan to attend the golden sacerdotal anniversary of Archbishop Marlo Peralta. Many of the towns we visited were off the usual route to Vigan, located in the more mountainous and remote areas of the province. These included Sugpon—the southernmost town of Ilocos Sur—Suyo, Galimuyod, Salcedo, Banayoyo, Lidlidda, Burgos, and Nagbukel. We also passed through towns closer to Vigan, such as Santa, Caoayan, Santa Catalina, San Vicente, Bantay, San Ildefonso, Santo Domingo, Magsingal, and the farthest among them, San Juan.

When we arrived in Sugpon, the Sunday mass was just about to start. We planned at first to attend mass at the Cathedral in San Fernando. Considering that we had to travel to several towns I decided that we hear mass along the way, even planning to celebrate a private mass if necessary.

These used truck and vans were the display at the entrance of the town just after crossing the long bridge which connects La Union to Ilocos Sur.

There were still scaffoldings at the facade of the church of Bantay as renovations were still ongoing after the church was damaged from the earthquake in 2022. Was told that the scaffoldings inside the church was just taken out in time for the celebration of the golden sacerdotal anniversary of Abp. Peralta. It was not done at the Vigan Cathedral as the church is still under repairs.
